CYMC offers a range of programs that support young artists throughout the year. Each program blends high-quality instruction with a creative, encouraging environment where students can build skills, express themselves, and connect with a community of passionate performers.

Festival Choir

A lively choral program where singers learn festival repertoire, improve vocal skills, and perform together as a large ensemble

Price: $50.00 CAD per class

Class length: 3 months

Class schedule: 

Mon – Wed : 10AM – 12:30PM

Suitable for ages 10–18

Musical Theatre

A fun, upbeat class where you get to sing, dance, act, and just enjoy bringing musical scenes to life with a great group of people

Price: $50.00 CAD per class

Class length: 2 months

Class schedule: 

Tue – Thur: 10AM – 12:30PM

Suitable for ages 7 and above

Island Jazz Intensive

The CYMC Island Jazz Intensive is a two-week program where students focus on jazz improvisation and performance

Price: $60.00 CAD per person

Camp schedule: 

5th April – 19th April (Start at 8AM)

Suitable for ages 12 and above (requires parent/guardian approval)

Classical Intensive

Spend three months at CYMC building your technique and musicianship through a range of immersive, skill-building classes

Price: $55.00 CAD per class

Class length: 3 months

MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS

Adam Robertson - Instructor

Adam Robertson is a Powell River–born drummer and composer with deep West Coast roots. A Jazz Studies graduate from Vancouver Island University, he performs and teaches across the island with artists such as Keanu Ienco, NOLA Nighthawks, Dry Goods, and Mahogany.

Steve Wallace - Bassist

Steve Wallace, born in Toronto in 1956, is one of Canada’s top jazz bassists. His career includes touring and recording with major American and Canadian artists, including Zoot Sims, Ray Bryant, Rosemary Clooney, Oscar Peterson, and Ed Bickert. He moved to Courtenay in 2021 with his wife, Anna.

 

Greg Bush - Trumpet

Montreal-born Greg holds degrees from Concordia and McGill and has taught at several institutions, including Abilene University and now Vancouver Island University. A freelance jazz trumpeter, arranger, and composer, he has performed across Canada and internationally and released a CD of original music titled Cause and Effect

James Darling - Piano

James holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from VIU and studied piano with Phil Dwyer, Bob Murphy, and Steve Smith. He spent ten years performing on cruise ships and now plays with Johnny Inappropriate, VIU’s Vocal Jazz Choir, and the Duncan Symonds Trio.

Cayleigh Borsboom - Instructor

Cayleigh Borsboom is a bookseller by day and musician by night. After two years studying at Humber College, she made Courtenay her home. She loves books, nature, board games, jazz, and time with her chosen family.

Lori Mazey - Director

Lori Mazey teaches Theatre Arts and Dance at G.P. Vanier and holds degrees in Theatre, Educational Leadership, and an ATCL from Trinity College London. She has directed over 50 award-winning productions and has received major honours including the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. Lori also coaches improv teams that have earned national and global championships.

 

Carol Anne Parkinson - Music Director

Carol Anne Parkinson is a vibrant singer, voice teacher, and conductor with a Bachelor of Music from UBC. She has performed with renowned choirs and directed groups including the Hellenic Chorus, CYMC choirs, and Nova Voce. Currently leading Men of Notes, she also appears as a soloist with various ensembles. Offstage, she enjoys curling, exploring Seal Bay, and knitting with her dog nearby.

Livea Gill Harding - Choreographer

James holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from VIU and studied piano with Phil Dwyer, Bob Murphy, and Steve Smith. He spent ten years performing on cruise ships and now plays with Johnny Inappropriate, VIU’s Vocal Jazz Choir, and the Duncan Symonds Trio.
